DECEMBER SERMON SERIES

SERIES NAME: MESSY CHRISTMAS
BOTTOM LINE: GOD SHOWS UP IN THE MESS, SO LET HIM SHOW UP IN YOURS

All of us struggle in so many ways. We struggle with things we would not want other people to see or know about us. Some of us are struggling with relationship issues, financial issues, sexual issues, behaviours issues etc.

Our problem is not that we are struggling but our problem is seeing the need to look picture perfect. We want everyone to think we’ve got it all together. In wanting to show that we have got it all together we miss the gospel. The gospel is for the people who can say “I need help because I don’t have it all together.”

We must also be honest that most people do not want to reveal what they are really going through because of fear. Fear of being judged, or fear of having their struggles used as a weapon against them. I hope we as a church can honestly reveal our struggles to God and to each other so that we can find God, compassion and support. I hope we can all choose to journey with each other rather than judge each other.

CHRISTMAS

We love making the Christmas story a picture perfect one- but the Christmas story is a perfect example of weakness, failure and struggle being revealed as God enters the world incarnate.

Jesus is perfect but:

Being born to a poor and young woman wasn’t picture perfect.
Being carried and delivered by an unmarried couple wasn’t picture perfect. Being born in a stable wasn’t picture perfect.
Having shepherds as first visitors wasn’t picture perfect
Fleeing from political threat as a new family wasn’t picture perfect.

Jesus loves to get into the mess. He shows up in the mess and he can show up in your mess if you let him. He brings beauty out of chaos
