STRENGTH FOR THE WEEK: Flood Church’s Weekly Devotional

SERIES 1: The Voice of God

A Calming Voice

He stood up and told the wind to be silent, the sea to quiet down: “Silence!” The sea became smooth as glass. Matthew 8:26 MSG

Anxiety is something every person faces, and the disciples of Jesus are no exception. Sometimes we can be paralyzed by thoughts about the future, thoughts about outcomes we have no control over, thoughts about situations that seem hopeless, or thoughts about ourselves that are destructive and not from God.

Worries such as these fill our minds because life often seems unpredictable or out of our control, and in reality, life is such. We don’t know what surprises, good or bad, are in store for us the next week, the next day or even the next hour. There are times in life when we feel like a storm is throwing us from side to side and there is nothing we can do about it. Perhaps its finances, an illness, a relationship, or our job, but whatever it is, in the midst of our uncertainty, panic and lack of control, we often forget that God is present, powerful and in control.

The disciples were feeling immense anxiety in the boat as it rocked on the stormy water. They were scared, desperate and probably felt like their lives had come to an end. Though their faith was weakened by perilous circumstances and their own lack of control, it was still alive. They called out to Jesus and He heard them, responded to them, and rescued them.

When our faith feels weak, when circumstances feel chaotic, when we feel anxious and afraid, we too can call out to Jesus and have confidence that he hears us and that he is there for us.

Let us be comforted by the Word of God in Isaiah 43 when we read: “Do not be afraid, for I have redeemed you. I have called you by name; you are mine. When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown.”

Is there anything giving you anxiety that you feel the need to cry out to Jesus for help in? We would love to join you in prayer in that, feel free to leave a comment.
